Cloth diapers have been around since the early 1800’s when they were mass produced by Maria Allen. It wasn’t until the 1950’s when a frustrated mom named Marion Donovan decided to invent a diaper that didn’t need to be washed. Using a shower curtain and metal straps, Donovan invented the “Boater”diaper which helped minimize leaks. After a year of experimenting, she made her first diaper out of nylon parachute cloth and found a way to mass produce her new disposable diaper.
