Time-Out Tips

It’s inevitable. Sooner or later you are going to have to give your toddler his or her first time-out. Here are a few tips that can help make the experience a positive one. 1. Have a designated space (usually a chair) for the time-out. Place the chair out of reach of any toys or other distractions. 2. Set the timer. A good rule of thumb is 1 minute for each year the child is old. The timer helps mom or dad keep track of the time, and gives the toddler a sense of a higher authority. 3. When the timer sounds, quickly shut it off. Take this opportunity, while your toddler is still in the chair, to talk to him about why he was given a time out. Encourage him to "use his words" and participate in the discussion. 4. Finish the time out with a hug and an "I love you." It is important for your toddler to know that you can be angry and still love her.
